Under new draft regulations, companies in England, Wales and Scotland with more than 250 employees would have to reveal differences in the levels of pay between men and women. Companies would provide the numbers of men and women in different pay ranges, highlighting where the biggest gaps are.
Let’s not get overexcited – the government is consulting on the draft regulations and companies would not actually have to start reporting the figures until 2018. This is to give them chance to put measures in place to prepare the reports.
But hopefully this reporting will shed light on inequalities and promote greater diversity and fairness in the workplace. The BBC reports figures from the Office for National Statistics showing that on average women in the UK still earn around 20% less than men.There is a human right not to be discriminated against on the ground of gender.
