What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
What’s the problem?
A report from the World Economic Forum indicates that, as things stand, it will take until 2133 for gender parity to be achieved. This means that it will take 117 years for women and men to have the same rights and opportunities worldwide. Equality is central to human rights and is protected by the European Convention of Human Rights through its anti-discrimination provisions. Read our poster on no discrimination for more.
What can we do?
This year’s Campaign Theme for International Women’s Day is #PledgeforParity. This calls on individuals to commit to accelerating gender parity by making a unique pledge to close the gender gap. These pledges vary from calling for a gender-balanced leadership to valuing women’s and men’s contributions equally.
